How can I download free e-books to my Amazon Kindle?
You can’t just read books from Amazon on your Kindle. I’ll tell you where to find free ebooks and how to convert a variety of other ebook formats for the Kindle.
The Amazon Kindle is one of the most well-known ebook readers, but only within the Amazon ecosystem. If you possess a Fire tablet or a smartphone, you can download additional e-reading applications to access your library, but if you own an E Ink Kindle (including the Paperwhite and Oasis), you will essentially be forced to buy your content from Amazon.com. This includes both the Paperwhite and Oasis.
Well, sort of. You can transfer ebooks in the EPUB, Mobi, and PDF formats to your Kindle using some free software.
Here are the steps, as listed below.
Find Your Kindle Email first.
Email is the best method for adding books to your Kindle.
Please open the web browser on your PC and navigate to the website amazon.com/myk to obtain your Kindle’s email address.
Click the Devices tab at the top.
Locate the appropriate Kindle device in the list below, then click the three dots to the left of it.
You can notice a @kindle.com email address in the pop-up window. (The address is set to the default; you may change it by clicking Edit.)
View our guide on controlling your Amazon Kindle devices and content.
Return to the top, select Preferences, then select Personal Document Settings.
To access the Approved Personal Document E-mail List, use the right arrow to scroll down and click.
Your Amazon account’s email address needs to be put here. You’re ready to go if you’ll be sending e-books to your Kindle from that email address.
Click Add a new authorized e-mail address and input the desired address to use a different email.
Keep in mind that for your Kindle to function, a Wi-Fi or 4G network must be active. The network shouldn’t have to be at home because you can occasionally visit a coffee shop or a public library.
Choose a Format for Your E-Book
After learning how to email an e-book to your Kindle, the next step is to identify the format of your e-book because it will affect how to send it.
A Mobi file
Good news: Your books are already Kindle-compatible if they are in the Mobi format. The file should soon appear on your Kindle if you attach it to an email and send it to the email address associated with your Kindle (without including anything in the email’s body or subject line). If you connect your Kindle to your PC using a USB cord, you may also drag and drop the file onto the device.
Adobe PDF
However, you only have two formatting options when Amazon converts PDFs into Kindle format. Simply email the PDF file without a subject line to the address for your Kindle if you want your Kindle to show every page in the PDF as if it were graphic.
The images and layout will remain the same, but the font size could be difficult to read. If you don’t mind the formatting, you may also drag and drop the file onto your Kindle and connect it to your PC through a USB cord.
Another choice is to send an email with the PDF file attached and the text “Convert” in the subject line. Your PDF will be transformed into a Mobi file, where you may edit the formatting and font size when you send it to your Kindle email account. You’ll still have the graphics, but the formatting of the original PDF won’t be there.
Format EPUB
Although EPUB is a widely used ebook format online, the Kindle cannot read it natively. You may still read.epub files on the Kindle by converting them to Mobi files.
The secret is a free program called Calibre, which is available for Windows and Macs and can reformat practically any type of ebook for most ebook readers. However, it is not permitted to bypass copy protection on books bought from Amazon or specific other retailers. When you install the program, it asks you what kind of ebook reader you have, and a pop-up window offers the option of emailing the books to you. Enter your Kindle’s email address as well as the approved email address you’ve chosen to use to transmit documents to your Kindle.
Library calibre
After installing Calibre, choose any free ebook files you’ve obtained by clicking Add Books. You may find them in the Calibre library. Now choose Convert Books from the top bar after clicking on a book in your Calibre collection.
Make sure the Output Format is set to Mobi in the top right corner. Click OK, then watch as the Jobs number decreases from 1 to 0 in the lower-right corner of the main screen. Select the title once again, then choose Save to Disk.
Choose the directory where you wish to save it. A subdirectory containing the author’s name will be produced. Drill into that folder in Explorer or Finder until you discover the Mobi file there; you can then email that file to your Kindle or drag and drop it onto it with a USB cord.
Also keep in mind that you may send your Kindle text files, blog entries, Word documents, and more. Simply email them to your Kindle address and congratulations.
Where Can I Download Free Ebooks?
Free ebooks may be found anywhere. You may click Get Books to search by title or author in Calibre, which features a useful metasearch feature. But browsing isn’t the friendliest thing about it.
Try downloading OverDrive if you have a library card from a US public library. It connects to public library catalogs and allows you to download Kindle books from Amazon. It is available for Windows and macOS. Your local library may be located, and OverDrive offers send-to-Kindle instructions for all device types.
Hoopla and Libby both offer comparable services.
Project Gutenberg is a wonderful place to start if you’re looking for classics. Nearly 60,000 ebooks are available through Project Gutenberg, which has existed for almost as long as the internet. Here is how to obtain ebooks there.
There are many more downloadable books at Open Library. You may send the classics to your Kindle using the PDF method above after downloading them as PDFs.
Look at archive.org to find literature from the past and academia.
ManyBooks.net has approximately 50,000 books in its collection, including both self-published and classic works.
At FeedBooks, you may discover more self-published and classic books.
In addition to a substantial selection of self-published ebooks, Free-Ebooks.net also provides a sizable selection of classics.
There are several free ebooks available from the publisher Baen if you enjoy science fiction.
A few bookstores employ copy protection that is ineffective on Kindles. Unfortunately, Google Books, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble all have that issue.
